LESSON 5: POST-CAMP TRAINING
What You Should Know About Your NYSC Certificate of Training
As a serving corps member, you are eligible to receive two certificates at the end of your service year, also known as your Passing Out Parade (POP):
- Certificate of National Service (CNS)
- Certificate of Training
While most corps members are familiar with the Certificate of National Service, many are unaware of the equally valuable Certificate of Training.
What is the Certificate of Training?
This certificate is awarded to corps members who actively engage in skill acquisition, personal development, and entrepreneurship training during their service year. It is part of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) initiative of the NYSC, specifically referred to as SAED Post-Camp Training.
During your 3-week orientation camp, you were likely introduced to SAED In-Camp Training. That’s only the beginning. The real value lies in continuing your training after camp—this is what qualifies you for the Certificate of Training.
Why the Certificate of Training Matters
- Proof of Development:
It demonstrates that you used your service year not just to work but to develop valuable skills for your personal and professional growth. - Attractive to Employers:
After NYSC, employers want to know how you’ve spent the past 1–3 years since graduation. This certificate shows you invested your time wisely in building skills that matter.
But There’s a Catch…
Not all SAED training will earn you the certificate. Why? Because only corps members who train with NYSC-accredited centers are eligible.
The SAED Department of NYSC is responsible for:
- Accrediting training centers
- Monitoring training quality and commitment
- Verifying actual participation
If you’re training with an unaccredited facility, you will not receive the NYSC Certificate of Training, no matter how diligent you are.
Areas of Training Available
SAED training covers a wide range of sectors, but we can group them into four broad categories:
- Business Development
Courses that teach entrepreneurship and small business management. - Corporate & Professional Skills
Job-ready skills like project management, HR, customer service, and public speaking. - Digital Marketing
Training in areas like social media marketing, content creation, SEO, and AI in marketing. - ICT/Tech Skills
For those looking to enter the tech space, even with no prior background.
Challenges Facing Corps Members
Despite the great benefits, many corps members miss out on this opportunity due to:
- Lack of Awareness:
SAED is emphasized during orientation, but many forget about it after camp. - Financial Constraints:
Rising living costs consume much of the monthly stipend, leaving little for training. - Limited Access:
Over 70% of corps members serve in rural areas with few or no training facilities.
How NYSC is Tackling These Issues
To ensure accessibility and inclusion, the SAED department has taken steps to bridge these gaps:
- Routine sensitization by SAED field officers and LGIs
- Discounted training fees negotiated with accredited centers
- Partnerships with online training platforms like Jomo Resource Center, allowing corps members in remote areas to participate
